ECD Programme
ECD Reference

The Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme supports children's survival, growth, development, and learning in formal, informal and non-formal settings, from birth to entry into primary school. Programme focus areas include health, nutrition, hygiene, social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and creative development. In Karen refugee camps the ECD programme is available at nursery schools run by refugee communities, and managed by the Karen Women's Organization with NGO's offering financial support, training and logistical help.

The ECD programmes in Mae La, Umpiem Mai and Nupo Camp are managed by the KWO under the guidance of Taipei Overseas Peace Service (TOPS). In Mae Ra Ma Luang camp, ECD is managed by KWO with guidance and support provided by Women's Education for Advancement and Empowerment (WEAVE) and other NGO's. The Mae La Oon camp nursery school project is co-coordinated by the KWO and Empowering Women of Burma (EWOB).

Currently (2008) there are approximately 5500 children at 49 nursery schools in 5 Karen refugee camps along the Thai/Burma border.

The online ECD Reference is a joint venture of the KWO and TOPS.
